Enhancing the reliability of the South African electricity supply

The project aims to support the South African government in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by ESKOM in the electricity sector. This assignment involves a comprehensive analysis of the current South African electricity sector to devise solutions for overcoming these challenges, which include technical supply shortages, financial constraints, and regulatory issues.
In this context, GOPA collaborated with the National Treasury to review existing laws, regulations, and challenges. This review led to the development of several options, each with its pros and cons, regarding the future structure of the South African electricity market. Subsequently, an action plan was formulated to implement the most preferred option, aimed at overcoming the identified challenges.
The project resulted in the identification of relevant stakeholders and their responsibilities, mapped out against a timeline to achieve technical and financial stability and reduce current supply shortages in the short term.
Moreover, the project has significant people-focused impacts, enhancing the reliability of electricity supply, which is crucial for the daily lives and economic activities of South Africans. By stabilising the electricity sector, the initiative also promotes social and economic development, providing a foundation for improved quality of life and increased opportunities for communities across the nation.
