The overall objective of this project is to enhance the conceptual framework for reducing land-based waste leakage into the sea in selected ASEAN countries. The initiative is structured into three key work packages, each addressing critical aspects of waste management and environmental protection.

Work Package 1 focuses on Integrated Solid Waste Management and Plastic Waste Management, aiming to develop comprehensive strategies for managing waste effectively and minimizing plastic pollution. Work Package 2 involves the collection and processing of recyclables, encouraging participation from both the private and informal sectors. This package also includes the implementation of an Extended Producer Responsibility scheme for plastic packaging, promoting sustainable practices among manufacturers. Work Package 3 is dedicated to developing a behaviour change strategy, aiming to educate and motivate communities to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

The project has profound people-focused impacts, improving the quality of life for local communities by reducing pollution and promoting cleaner environments. By addressing waste management comprehensively, the initiative also fosters healthier living conditions and supports sustainable development, empowering residents to contribute to environmental preservation and enjoy the benefits of a cleaner, safer ecosystem.
