Strategic communication to shape a new narrative

Trust but verify: fighting disinformation in the digital age

Supporting the EU in countering misinformation and protecting integrity

Social media has transformed how we all source and share news, but it has also blurred the lines between journalism and entertainment, making it harder to distinguish fact from fiction. This shift has led to a meteoric surge in misinformation and disinformation, undermining public trust and democratic integrity in organisations.

Strengthening media resilience in Europe

GOPA is working hand in hand with European institutions to enhance media literacy, improve fact-checking mechanisms, and strengthen regulatory frameworks to combat disinformation. We provide research, policy recommendations, and strategic communication to help stakeholders detect, debunk, and prevent the spread of false narratives.

As part of our global effort, GOPA supports the implementation of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) and other initiatives that monitor misinformation and boost media resilience. By cultivating collaboration between policymakers, journalists, researchers, and digital platforms, these projects ensure European citizens access to accurate, transparent, and reliable information.

A multi-layered approach to mitigate misinformation

To address the complex and evolving challenges surrounding misinformation, GOPA’s work focuses on five core areas:

  • Monitoring and research: We support EU efforts to track online misinformation trends and assess their impact on public perception.
  • Fact-checking and verification: We partner with institutions with independent fact-checkers and media experts to strengthen the detection of false or misleading content.
  • Media literacy and public awareness: We develop educational campaigns and resources to help citizens critically engage with digital information.
  • Strategic communication: We provide expertise in content creation and dissemination to counter disinformation with fact-based narratives.
  • Policy and regulation support: We advise European institutions on regulatory measures that improve transparency and accountability on digital platforms.

Navigating new challenges in the digital landscape

Misinformation spreads like wildfire on social media, often amplified by influencers, AI-generated content, and targeted disinformation campaigns. A 2024 UNESCO study revealed that 62% of social media influencers do not verify information before sharing it.

The need for stronger digital literacy initiatives is indisputable. GOPA supports projects that equip policymakers, media professionals, and citizens with the tools needed to detect, debunk, and counteract false information. We are dedicated to ensuring Europe remains at the forefront of digital resilience, protecting democratic debate and public trust in the digital age.

With research, policy expertise, and strategic communication, we believe we can, and should build a more transparent, reliable, and well-informed digital Europe together.
